Outdoor Ceremony & Tour Mark Unveiling of the Mountainview Centre for Innovative Learning at Pathstone

School renamed after donor

Thorold, ON (September 22, 2021) – Today, donors, stakeholders, community members and staff gathered at Pathstone’s school on Merrittville Hwy to re-open the campus as the Mountainview Centre for Innovative Learning. Guests then took part in an outdoor exploration tour of Pathstone’s newly developed play and learning hubs.
The new naming comes after Mountainview Building Group, made a Lifetime Impact Gift of $1M to Pathstone.

This donation provided not only an overhaul of the HVAC system, replacement of interior lights and skylights, it also helped fund the development of a series of outdoor learning and play hubs on the property which includes two outdoor classrooms.

This site plays a vital role in Pathstone’s intensive therapy program where counsellors work in collaboration with DSBN teachers tailoring a plan for each student they support. Kids in grades 1 through 8 come from across the Region typically for one full school year to receive this specialized care. Pathstone’s goal is to strengthen students’ emotional, social, and educational skills, to better equip them for future success when they return to their former school.

Today, was about gathering with people who were immensely moved by what happens at this school. No longer referred to as the school on Merrittville Highway, it was officially named after a company and organization that are both forward thinking, invested, committed, and filled with passion for the work they do.
Kim Rossi, Director of Philanthropy & PR, Pathstone.

Creation of the outdoor learning and play hubs were the work of Bienenstock Natural Playgrounds, considered innovators in designing rich, natural and restorative outdoor spaces. Founder and lead designer, Adam Bienenstock shared their overall vision for Pathstone. “Our goal was to create a respite from the stress our children face, especially now, and a place for every child to grow and find joy and success. Our team at Bienenstock is so proud of our collaboration with Pathstone Foundation. It is rare to find clients and sponsors and community who have fully dedicated their lives to improving the lives of others”

Of course, none of these projects would have been possible without the commitment that came from Mountainview Building Group, and in addition, commitments from the late Rosslyn Reed, Rob & Patricia Neill, The Memme Family, The Basciano Family, Meridian, Lowe’s Canada, Walker Industries, Ontario Power Generation, and the Djebbari Family.

What I find incredibly inspiring is the passion of the people working at Pathstone and the way they splash their hearts all over, in the name of their students. We have seen first-hand the benefits of our past gifts and hope to continue to strengthen Pathstone’s ability to make a difference in people’s lives with this one. Watching people doing good moves me, and we at Mountainview want to do our part to make the walk easier for anyone who is struggling in any form. We are thankful to Pathstone for allowing us the opportunity to join their efforts in a significant way.
Mark Basciano, President of Mountainview Building Group.

The Mountainview Centre for Innovative Learning will continue to serve as Pathstone’s primary school, as well as support other Pathstone programs. Our mission is to continue to move our organization forward through thoughtful, innovative thinking. Mark truly understands the ‘big picture’ of investing in our children’s mental health and well-being, and he is ultimately building a stronger and healthier community for generations to come. We feel so fortunate to have Mark in our corner on a number of our major projects.
Shaun Baylis, CEO, Pathstone Mental Health.

The entire team at Mountainview have been long-time supporters of Pathstone through sponsorships, lead gifts, and volunteer efforts. Mark’s first major project with Pathstone was the Mountainview Playground & Garden, a 10,000 square foot outdoor space, located at the Branscombe Centre in St. Catharines. Mark has also supported and mentored the philanthropic efforts of three local high school students who make up The Mane Event Team. This young group has raised over $40,000 for Pathstone over the past three years.

Building stronger families: Participants Needed

Research study focussed on the overall betterment of families.

Kids and their families have been subjected to monumental change through the pandemic. A collaboration on a parenting and family support study will take a closer look at two new parenting programs.

The Offord Centre for Child Studies out of McMaster University and Pathstone Mental Health have collaborated on this effort and hope to gain an overall understanding if families in this study benefit from one program over the other, or see benefit in both.

The Triple P (Positive Parenting Program) and the Circle of Security Parenting Program (COSP) each offer ways for parents and caregivers to develop practical skills, which can help decrease challenging behaviours and emotions in young children, and help, better the families’ relationship. This fall, the study will also address an important evidence gap – “we want to see which of the programs will benefit families and their children more, and whether these programs are better than existing ones”. Andrea Gonzalez, Associate Professor, Canada Research Chair in Family Health and Preventive Interventions, Offord Centre for Child Studies at McMaster University. This project comes at a time when COVID-19 continues to add challenges to kids and families.

40 per cent of parents indicated their children’s behaviour/mood had deteriorated and there were findings of extremely high levels of depression among caregivers. *Offord Centre’s landmark 2020 Ontario Parent Survey.

As students head back to class, we know there will be a new set of challenges that families experience. Research suggests that parenting programs can improve emotional and behavioural adjustment of children and enhance the psychosocial well-being of parents. By taking part in this study, parents/caregivers may find they feel more positive about themselves and caregiving skills and strategies, but also helping other parents/caregivers in the future.

“We are actively looking for families with children aged 2 -6 to enrol in this study,” says Gonzalez. If families need technology in order to participate, we can help with that too. In recognition of the time and effort as participants in the study, parents will receive gift cards for completing required interviews.

Pelham Community supports a 9th Youth Mental Health Walk-In Clinic.

Ahead of what is typically their busiest time of year, Pathstone Mental Health is announcing the creation of a ninth in-person walk-in clinic, to be located in the town of Pelham.

The opportunity for an in-person mental health walk in clinic was presented to Pelham Town Council and approved unanimously. Funding for this clinic, ($20,000 annually) which is not covered by the Ministry of Health is coming from a variety of funding streams that include, the Town of Pelham, The Fenwick Lions Club, Fonthill Lions Club, the Fonthill Kinsmen Club, and the Pelham Library.

This kind of commitment from so many groups show a collaborative spirit in support of children and youth in our community. Kim Rossi, Director of Philanthropy & PR at Pathstone

The youth mental health clinic will be hosted on the second floor of the Meridian Community Centre in Fonthill, every TUESDAY from 11:30- 7:30pm, beginning Tuesday, September 7, by appointment. As always, mental health support will be offered in-person by a Pathstone clinician with no referral, cost or health card needed. Same day or advance appointments can be made by calling 1-800-263-4944.

It’s great news for Pelham to be able to have the clinic opening. Right now, it is really important to have mental health support available for youth and their families. We are very happy to see this partnership happen.
Mayor Marvin Junkin, Pelham

It is a privilege for the Fonthill Lions Club to support this program in Pelham. We are in the midst of a time when Mental Health has come to the forefront. Going through this pandemic has been hard on all of us, especially the youth. We have to remember they are our future, so it is paramount that we have the best resources available to them.
Fred Arbour, Past District Governor, Fonthill Lions

The Fabulous Fenwick Lions are always ready to support youth as part of our commitment to the community. Our Club unanimously supported a Motion made to support this clinic with the understanding that our youth need all the resources available to them so that they may become adults who will change our world, making it a better place to live.
Jeff Pickup, President & Secretary, Fabulous Fenwick Lions Club

Having heard from countless members of the Pelham Community that COVID and the shutdowns have increased their concern for their children’s mental health, the Pelham Public Library Board was extremely happy to offer its support for a local, weekly, walk-in clinic in our community.
Nicole Nolan, Pelham Public Library Board Chair.

The Kinsmen of Fonthill and District have supported Pathstone in the past. They have spoken at one of our dinner meetings, so it was an easy vote by our club, when we heard they could provide a clinic right here in Pelham”.
Len Doyle, President, Kinsmen Club of Fonthill & District

Over the past 12 months, Pathstone saw close to 10,000 kids. This was a 35 per cent increase from the previous year, and projections show a further increase to come. With In-person Walk-In Clinic’s open and available in so many locations across the Region, accessing mental health support, in-person, the moment it’s needed is more robust than its ever been.

This program is serving the purpose we knew it would which is to reach children and youth right when they need us. Localized walk-in clinics also mean we are removing barriers to service. With this commitment from the Town of Pelham, they become the ninth in-person walk-in clinic currently operating in Niagara. All sites are open to Niagara’s children and youth up to age 18 as well as their parents / caregivers who want to talk about their children. We understand that sometimes kids do not want to come, but their parents can reach out for support. Tara Kelly, Clinical Manager at Pathstone

Lifetime Impact Gift made to Pathstone Foundation

Pathstone’s School to be named after donor

St. Catharines, ON (July 20, 2021) – Today we are celebrating a significant gift that will leave a lasting impact for children who lean on Pathstone Mental Health for help.

A donation of $1 million from Mountainview Building Group owner Mark Basciano, will support Pathstone’s primary school on Merrittville Highway. Construction is already underway on outdoor play and education hubs that include two classrooms.

This school plays a vital role in Pathstone’s intensive therapy program where therapists work in collaboration with DSBN teachers. Students in grades 1 through 8 come from across the Region typically for one full school year. Our goal is to strengthen students’ emotional, social, and educational skills, to better equip them for future success when they return to their former school.

This Lifetime Impact gift has been earmarked for a number of major projects at Pathstone’s educational campus which includes an outdoor space designed to enhance student engagement and connect them to nature. Studies have long shown exposure to education and play in an outdoor environment improves focus and retention, reduces stress and anxiety, and instills an element of calm in young people. Kim Rossi, Director of Philanthropy & PR, Pathstone.

What I find incredibly inspiring is the passion of the people working at Pathstone and the way they splash their hearts all over, in the name of their students. Mountainview and Pathstone align in their core values, to strive for excellence in all that they do, lead by example, and demonstrate deep commitment to community. With Mark’s commitment to Pathstone, we are honoured to name our school after his company.

The Mountainview Centre for Innovative Learning will continue to serve as our primary school, and support other Pathstone programs. Our mission is to continue to move our organization forward through thoughtful, innovative thinking.

Evidence of pandemic shown in growing number of clients seen at Pathstone

Niagara’s children’s Mental Health agency sees 35 percent increase in cases.

St. Catharines, ON (June 1, 2021) – Long after the population is vaccinated, the mental health effects of the pandemic will still be felt. Evidence is presented in the growing number of clients Pathstone Mental Health has seen and continues to see.

Over the past 12 months (April 1st 2020-March 31st 2021), 9,449 children and youth received early intervention, prevention, and acute mental health support at Pathstone, which is a 35% increase last years number of 7,012.

Director of Strategic Initiatives, Standards, and Practises, Bill Helmeczi took a more in depth look at the numbers, and identified programs that experienced substantial pressure. Some of our therapy programs for individuals as well as families saw increases of over 200 per cent, which is 250 times more clients than we are funded to serve.

The lockdowns created challenges for individuals to receive support from both social and health agencies. Although Pathstone returned to in-person services in April 2020, the limits to in-person service created an overwhelming demand for our crisis and support department. That program supported over 1200 clients, which was nearly 65% more than the year prior.

We recognize that mental health support is essential and proves to be the case even more so in a pandemic; waiting for service becomes far more challenging. Nearly a quarter of the clients we helped over the past 12 months came to us through our Immediate Services Program. Under this umbrella is our in-person or video walk-in clinic program, and the 24/7, Crisis & Support line. This team worked with over 2,000 children and youth who were in need of immediate mental health care and support.

We know from numerous studies, during the pandemic, that people have reported, feeling alone or always lonely, feeling depressed or anxious, needing supports to manage their children, while alcoholism and depression were compounded and created mental health challenges for children and families. Any of these conditions do not support the optimal development of children’s cognitive, social, emotional or physical health. More specifically, we know from recent studies that 62 per cent of youth in Ontario report concerns with anxiety and only 32 per cent have spoken to a mental health professional about it. In Ontario, one-third of children have missed school due to their anxiety. In Niagara, that would be approximately 28,000 children. Further, 17 per cent of children under the age of five have met the criteria for mental health issues. It is important to note that 70 per cent of individuals have identified adolescence as the time when their mental health issues were first realized. All of this can affect the developing brain causing both immediate and potentially long term health consequences if not treated and supported properly.

To that end, one of the largest segments of growth Pathstone experienced were of kids aged 6-10. They accounted for 43 per cent of our clients compared to the year previous (pre-pandemic) which was slightly less than 25 per cent. Such an increase is likely due to the significant impact felt from leaving a structured school environment to a more relaxed home learning environment. This group is not typically able to use social media to the extent of older children, which further separated them from their peers. Social interaction for all children is critical. In this age group, children are transitioning from having only parents or siblings as their social group to now meeting other children of each sex, working in groups, partnering on homework projects and experiencing sleepovers. A big challenge for young people through the pandemic has been a result of changes to their school structure, the addition of online learning, and lack or elimination of social connection. This has caused an increase in cases of anxiety, particularly those in the primary grades. Experts suggest that it may take many years to crush the mental health curve.

Over the past few months, Pathstone Foundation addressed the need to support young children with Anxiety through the Worry Monster Campaign. The plush toys, that “eat worries” is a support tool kids are now using to better communicate their concerns to their Pathstone counsellors.

My young clients and their caring adults have been very appreciative of the worry monsters. It has been a great tool for helping children to contain big worries so that they can let them go and get back to the important work of being kids.
Sheri Eggleton, Pathstone Mental Health Therapist.

With a 35 per cent increase in overall cases over the past year, the effects have been particularly felt on our Brief Services program, which is now sitting with a wait list. Defined as six sessions or less of mental health support, this program did not have a wait pre-pandemic. As the primary care provider of children’s mental health care in the region, it is our responsibility to ensure families continue to get the service and support they need now, and in the future. With the increase in demand, we have long exhausted Ministry of Health funding, as such, we are now turning to the community to help us remedy the wait list issue. Support is needed to bulk up the Brief Services team and eat away at the wait list. In our estimation, it will take upwards of 18 months to solve.
Shaun Baylis, CEO, Pathstone Mental Health.

Local Kids burst the thermometer to help Niagara’s Kids Feel Better

Third Annual Fill the Pig, Feel Better Campaign surpasses goal in support of Mental Health

With a virtual effort in front of them, 15 local Youth Champions, powered by a Meridian Credit Union match raised over $31K for Pathstone.

With one month to hit a $30K goal, Pathstone’s Youth Champions knew what their marching orders were and hit social media with their message. They talked about the importance of good mental health, shared stories of their own struggles and encouraged the Niagara community to support the cause. Branch leads, at each Meridian Credit Union location across Niagara, were supporting these young volunteers too.

In past years, this campaign would kick off and wrap at a Niagara Ice Dog game with thousands of people watching and participating. With this year’s virtual effort, we relied on our exceptional partners at Meridian, and our Youth Champions to lead the way, tapping into their own network of people to elevate support for this campaign. One thing is certain; everyone’s mental health has been challenged at some point over the last year.

Our Youth Champions helped us expand our reach even further with their personal campaigns in support of children’s mental health. Kids helping other kids, no matter the cause is really, what this effort is all about. To be able to teach young people about philanthropy and the power of giving back, not to mention how good it feels should really be a community campaign in itself.
Kim Rossi, Director of Philanthropy & PR at Pathstone.

One of the most impactful stories of the campaign came just a few weeks ago. One of our younger Youth Champions, Aberdeen Smith was handing in the $2, 157 she had raised, at the Meridian on Kalar Road in Niagara Falls. A man, doing his banking asked her, “What is the money for?” When she told him, she was fundraising for Pathstone; he said to her, “We need more kids like you.” He then said to the teller, “I will match the amount she has raised, and take it out of my account.” And with that, Aberdeen had raised $4,288.

All funds raised through this campaign will support Pathstone’s Immediate Services Program, which means NO WAIT to get mental health support. Under the Immediate Services umbrella are our 8 in-person walk-in clinics, our video counselling program and our 24/7 Crisis & Support line which can be reached at 1-800-263-4944.

Meridian recognizes the importance mental health has played, especially through the pandemic. Today’s campaign wrap up means that Meridian has helped raise over $130,000 for Pathstone over the past three years. As a Meridian employee, and proud mom of one of this year’s Youth Champions, I know that together we are making a difference in our community.

Pathstone Marks Pink Shirt Day 2021

Looking at bullying through the lens of a 9 year old.

Today, Wednesday, February 24, 2021 is Pink Shirt Day. It’s a day to combat bullying and raise awareness that bullying happens every day, everywhere.

What can you do if you witness bullying?

Say something.

Studies show that when someone intervenes, 50% of bullying ends within 10 seconds.

Today we are sharing the story of a Pathstone client who was bullied at every turn. After doing the work, and being supported by his therapist, Ash is thriving.

The Story

If you spend time with Ash, you will see he’s a sweet kind boy with a big heart full of love. You will learn, he’s obsessed with Pokemon, the TV show, The Mandalorian, and books. His favourite author is Rodman Philbrick.

Ash is all about the details. He will tell you about every Pokemon character and what makes each one so special. He’ll likely tell you a joke, because he loves to make others laugh.

Once he feels comfortable, Ash will tell you that he was the victim of endless bullying at school. He envisioned how his day would turn out before getting out of bed each morning.

When Covid-19 hit and schools were closed, this grade 4 student’s daily battle finally ended. No school meant the kid who was bullying him could no longer reach him. He couldn’t be stared down, pushed around, or threatened. Ash felt safe at home.

However, this didn’t solve everything.

Ash was at Pathstone, being supported by therapist Kathy Molloy, who talked about their sessions together.

“We worked on coping with his feelings of sadness, worry, confusion and anger. Fear was keeping him awake at night. Ash described it as being like a DVD that was always playing in his head. He’s since learned how to talk about his feelings, how to make the worries smaller and to focus on all of the good things about him, and his life. Most importantly, he learned how to trust again.

The Outcome

Today, Ash is at a new school, and is thriving socially, emotionally and academically. He still sees Kathy at Pathstone and is excited to tell her about the new friends he’s made

In his words, Ash says, “Pathstone has helped me deal with my issues, and I feel like I’ve been heard, and people want to help. I trust Kathy, and I know I can tell her anything.”

Today is PINK SHIRT DAY. A day to recognize that bullying still happens, and not only at school.

YOU can support Ash, and other kids just like him through found at www.pathstonefoundation.ca/donate Select PINK SHIRT DAY from the donation drop down menu.

Our job at Pathstone is to support kids and families across Niagara who need to lean on us for mental health support. Kids, just like Ash.

Nothing has been spared from the pandemic treatment or so it seems. This February, and for a third straight year, marks the start of the month-long “Fill the Pig, Feel Better” campaign.

This time around, over a dozen children and youth from across Niagara have volunteered to become Youth Champions for the campaign which is powered by Meridian, Ontario’s largest credit union and second largest in Canada, in support of Pathstone Foundation.

In past years, we relied on “passing the pig (piggy bank)” to collect donations. This year, we are asking Niagara  to contribute online, and help grow our goal thermometer. Our Youth Champions will also be encouraging support through their own social media accounts. They received campaign kits to help them make videos, create content and go LIVE about why they wanted to support the campaign, the importance of mental health, and where donations will go.

Our front-line services have been crushed with demand through the pandemic, which is now entering an eleventh month. All donations will be directed to our front-line programs that include:

Our Crisis & Support Line which operates 24/7 as well as our in-person walk-in clinic and our video counselling walk-in clinic which offers services Monday through Friday. Not only is this campaign a great example of how kids are stepping up for other kids, they are doing so at a time that is so fragile to everyone’s mental health. Youth Ambassadors who decided to join us for this campaign are quite familiar with it.

Aberdeen started knocking on doors asking for donations for Pathstone when she was just 6 years old. Sevin, Duncan and Aidia who make up The Mane Event Team have raised over $40,000 for Pathstone and will be representatives for the Meridian branch in Grimsby. Addison who at age 9, launched her own company with proceeds supporting Pathstone, will be one of the faces of the Stevensville & Fort Erie branches.

Over the past two years, this campaign has raised over $100K for Pathstone. The need now, is greater than it has ever been. We are especially delighted to launch the Youth Champion program this year. It involves kids who can speak first-hand to their peers, and our community, about the lasting and positive impact Pathstone makes. As a Meridian employee, and proud mom of one of this year’s Youth Champions, I know that together we make a difference in the lives of people in our communities.
